Public Books publishes new articles on policing, prison

Public Books recently published two new articles on prison and policing justice issues.

In “A Poetics of Living Rebellion,” Nick Barber reviews Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt, Orisanmi Burton’s revolutionary new book that provides a radial reinterpretation of “Attica,” the revolutionary 1970s uprising that galvanized abolitionist movements and transformed prisons.

Published in collaboration with Gotham: A Blog for Scholars of New York City History, Matthew Guariglia interviews Emily Brooks about her new book Gotham’s War within a War, which explores the emergence of a new model of racist and sexist policing under reform Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.
