JIE community featured in multimedia art show

Fragments of Appreciation and Aspiration: Bridging Today’s Appreciations and Tomorrow’s Possibilities is a multimedia exhibition highlighting work by incarcerated participants and JIE volunteers. The pieces were created in a visual art workshop developed in collaboration with The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Justice-in-Education Initiative, with assistance from arts educator and expressive arts therapist Laura Betancur and former SOF/Heyman Education and Outreach Manager Mia Ruyter. Each session opened with a close study of a work from the Studio Museum’s collection, inviting participants to draw on their observations and emotional responses as the starting point for creating their own mixed-media pieces.

The show is curated and designed by Kate Scott, an art and design library associate at Gottesman Libraries who began volunteering with JIE in spring 2026. The exhibition explores identity, memory, community, and hope through mixed-media collage, observational painting, text, and assemblage.

The exhibition is on view through October 17, 2026, on the first floor of Teachers College.
