Event of Note:

Kafka’s Ape, is a critically acclaimed theatre production based on Franz Kafka’s short story “A Report to the Academy.” Directed by Phala O Phala and performed by Tony B Miyambo, the play depicts a primate’s struggle to overcome the confines of captivity.

The play takes a metaphorical view of society and highlights the complexities of identity in post-apartheid South Africa and the human race at large. Red Peter, the ape, embarks on a journey after finding a way out of a cage he was confined to after his capture, a journey in which he contests the idea that identity is based on one's outward appearance.

The critically acclaimed theatre production was awarded:

—2015 Silver Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival
—2017 Best public performance award at the 2017 HSS awards
—2019 Oustanding performance award at The Prague fringe festival
