After Rikers: Course Change for People with Serious Mental Illness, Substance Use Disorders, and Other Disabilities

Panelists will discuss mechanisms and programs to prevent, divert and re-direct people with serious mental illness, substance use disorders and other disabilities from entering, staying in or returning to the criminal justice system.

Topics will include:

—Diversion of sex offenders and people living with autism and developmental disabilities in Brooklyn
—Florida's CIT 2.0 and 3.0 programs and new multi-service diversion center
—Secure and non-secure residential diversion options being proposed in Arizona
—Why AOT must be first on the list of options to keep people out of the criminal justice system
—Reforms necessary to make parole about promoting re-entry instead recidivism. 

Panelists include AZ State Rep. Nancy Barto, NYS Sen. Brian Benjamin, Bronx DA Darcel Clark, Judge Matthew D'Emic, D.J. Jaffe, and Judge Steven Leifman. Cheryl Roberts will serve as moderator.
