PEN America Launches Second Annual America Prison Writing Awards Anthology
September 24, 2019 In the Press
Last Thursday at the Brooklyn Book Festival, PEN America launched their second annual PEN America Prison Writing Awards anthology, As I Hear the Rain. The anthology features currently incarcerated artists Jeremy Wilson, Tara Layer, Andrew Romero and Lafayette Watts, as well as a cover illustrations by Tamara Santibañez.
Every year, hundreds of imprisoned writers from around the country submit poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and dramatic works to PEN America’s Prison Writing Awards, one of the few outlets of free expression for the country’s incarcerated population. Many describe the sense of validation the awards provide for their literary path, and the importance of that literary connection extending beyond prison walls. And it is no small achievement to be awarded. This year, the winning works were chosen from over one thousand entries.
You can now purchase the collection online in print or Kindle format and you can also preview anthology excerpts and the illustrated works.
